Frequently Asked Questions

Q - I’ve heard that some independent midwives don’t have insurance. Do you have insurance?

A - Because I only provide postnatal care I do have indemnity insurance through the Royal College of Nursing.

Q - When should I book?

A - You can book whenever you want, (including after your baby is born), but ideally it’s best to book by 32-36 weeks of your pregnancy so that you have an opportunity to have a pre-birth discussion about what to expect after the birth.

Q - Will I receive visits after my baby is born if I’m in hospital?

A - When you’re in hospital you are under the care of the midwives in that hospital, but as soon as you return home you will be visited.

Q - Will I still be seen by the NHS community midwife if I take out a perfectlypostnatal package?

A - It is up to you if you would like to receive NHS postnatal care as well, and you are entitled to do so. However, care from an independent midwife is intended to replace NHS midwifery care to reduce the possibility of receiving conflicting advice.

Q - What happens if you are unable to visit me?

A - In the unlikely circumstance that I can’t visit you (due to illness, for example), I will either re-arrange your visit with you if you don’t need to be seen urgently, or else I will arrange for another midwife to visit you.  I work closely with several other midwives who also work independently.
